When Grandpa Sang Amazing Grace

Tribute to My Grandpa by Julie Ware

My Grandpa loved to sing. He played the organ and paino by ear. All the grandchildren would gather around and join in.

His favorite song was Amazing Grace. He would proudly announce that he learned all the verses “by heart” when he was 5-6 years old.

Nate and I had come in for a visit from overseas . . . when we decided that we would all visit and worship together at mom’s church. There was an evangelist who ask if anyone had a song to share. Grandpa was always ready to sing Amazing Grace.

So he stood up and melodically belted out Amazing Grace at the top of his voice range . . . All of the verses . . . After the third verse, the evangelist started getting yancy that Grandpa was now eating into his time . . . So he said, “Thank You Mr. Smith” after the 3rd verse but Grandpa didn’t take the hint and was not deterred as he finished all of his stanzas of Amazing Grace.

A memory that Nate and I still like to revisit.
