Rev. Ray Amos – There is no one righteous, not even one… (Romans 3:10)

There was a time in my life when I believed that it would be impossible to be like the people in the Bible. They seemed so perfect and extraordinary. Then, I realized how wrong I was. In fact, we are very much alike. Like Paul, I can do what I shouldn’t, and not do what I should. Like Peter, I can go from right to wrong at the speed of the words that fall from my mouth. And, as it was with Elijah, I can go from the mountain top of victory to the valley of despair in a single day.

The Bible is not a book about the sinless righteous, but broken and sinful people that Christ came to redeem. It’s about people who fell down but didn’t stay down, who took the wrong direction, but got turned back around.

Noah was perfect in the sight of the Lord, but still needed, and found grace. It was easier for God to save an entire evil nation than it was for him to get a bad attitude out of Jonah. Samson took his strength for granted, and Demos forsook the faith because he loved the world better. It seems with each one we can see a reflection of ourselves.

There is absolutely no dirt that you can dig up on Daniel, yet he prayed the most powerful prayer of repentance in the Bible (Daniel 9). “As it is written: ‘There is no one righteous, not even one…” (Romans 3:10).

Now, for some good news: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Everything we were, our Savior became; so that we can be made like Him. We no longer even have to think of our inability to live up to the standards of others; WE CAN BE LIKE JESUS.

Sure, we are not there yet, but we are on the way. “Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” (1 John 3:2) Now that’s good news?
