Rev. Ray and Pat Amos
“In that day you will be like a man who runs from a lion–only to meet a bear. Escaping from the bear, he leans his hand against a wall in his house–and he’s bitten by a snake.” Amos 5:19
Now I would call that a bad day. The text is about the attitude of piously wishing that the Lord would return and take us from this troubled world when we really are not prepared to meet God. It is escaping one problem and running into a greater one.
Presuming upon grace is a dangerous sin. It is foolish to believe that we can just live any way that we wish and that God will say, “That’s okay.” We sin against God in a gross way when we think that we are a good enough person to not need Jesus’ sacrifice on Calvary’s Cross.
It is like the man who believes that praying “Give us this day our daily bread” is only for the poor who have no bread. O that he would understand how quickly his supply could run out. The truth is that we all need God. Our bread and our salvation come from the Lord, and only from the Lord.
Don’t think that we will tell Him what a blessing that we have been. We will know on that day what we can never imagine in this life: the extent of our sin, and the abundance of His grace. “Do you know my Jesus? Do you know my friend? Have you heard that He loves you?” It is the Lenten Season, and the call is to repent and come back quickly to the Lord. He gives us grace to do so.
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
By the way, remember that tomorrow is the Lord’s Day. If we are physically able, we have an appointment to make. Hebrews 10:25
