Ray Amos – Prayer of David (Psalm 51:2)
Who hasn’t hit a pothole when driving? That can mean having to get an alignment done on the car to keep it from veering off to the left or right. And, who hasn’t hit a few of life’s potholes? That too requires our attention, or else we begin to drift off the straight and narrow.
Life requires routine maintenance; and so does our soul. Neglect to change the oil and you soon have serious problems with your car engine. Neglect prayer, time in God’s Word, and worship; and soon there is a knocking in your heart, and life starts running a little rough.
When we were just starting out in ministry, Pat and I knew a pastor who was a good man, but with a heart that had become bitter. He believed that he had been wronged by church leadership, and just never got over it. When we saw what happened to him, we determined that we would not ever let that happen to us. We also learned over the years that Christians must work hard and stay close to God every day to keep it from happening.
In the Air force we found it almost impossible to keep our planes clean during the winters in South Dakota. A dirty plane creates drag, and that takes more fuel to fly. I have found that to be true with life. When our Christian life gets dirty we soon can find ourselves dragging where we once soared.
From time to time all Christians need to bow in the presence of our redeemer and Lord to pray the prayer of David, “Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin” (Psalm 51:2).
How long has it been since we brought our soul into the presence of our Maker? “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24
