James 5:20
“…know that whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.”
We had moved to our new appointment in Kingsport. It was a place that we had never been before. Fred had volunteered to show me around the new pasture where I would be working. We spent a couple of days going up and down streets, visiting people, showing me the hospitals, cemeteries, and all the places that I would need to know. He was a kind man who obviously loved the church and had the respect of the members. I remember him pointing out certain roads and places that were known for being dangerous. He would show them to me with a warning to be careful.
I appreciate the great number of people who have been a helper along the way. Some have pointed out beautiful places to see; a few have told me of better ways to go; and others have warned me of the highways that were dangerous.
I wonder, if I have done that for others along the road to Heaven. A little boy calls, “Preacher, Preacher, I want to show you something” as he takes my hand and pulls me along. When have I been so excited to show someone the beauty that is found in Christ’s Kingdom?
I was in Durham, NC and about to turn left on a road when a man on the sidewalk yelled at me. Then he pointed to a sign that was almost invisible because of some tree limbs. It said, “No Left Turn.” Soon traffic was speeding over the hill on a one way street. He could have said nothing, but he cared, and he saved a stranger from a serious accident.
“There is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way of death.” (Proverbs 14:12). Do we care enough to warn a traveler on that dead end street? “…know that whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.” (James 5:20)
In a busy world of “I got my own things to do,” I wonder; have we lost the caring in our soul? A man told his pastor in a meeting, “I don’t care that the people around me are going to hell.” Then with a serious and sad expression, he said, “That is what is troubling me: that I don’t care.” We have got to get the caring back!
