Psalm 119:105

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

We were on a mountain top in Haiti for a worship service. The shed like church was large and crude. We were told that this was the first service with electricity and lights. I noticed as the large crowd gathered that some were carrying lanterns with them. They would need them on the path back home, but I wonder if some did not trust the new lights.

Darkness came quickly and the lights cast a dim and yellowish glow over our heads. Suddenly everything was dark; the lights had failed. One by one several old lanterns began to glow, and the service was hardly interrupted. That night was like the Light in John’s Gospel: the light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never put it out.

Have you ever brought something back into service that you had put away because its new replacement wasn’t what you thought it would be? Perhaps I am foolish, but like Paul, I would rather be a fool for Christ’s sake, than be wise in this world. I keep wondering why it is getting darker, while at the same time we boast that we are a generation so much more enlightened.

It is time to pick up the Old Lantern again. The Bible is still the light in the night, the star that leads the wanderer to the Savior, the road map of every traveler who is looking for a city whose builder and maker is God.

A ship was alone on the dark night’s sea. The instruments used for guidance failed and the young captain panicked. An old seafarer stood by in perfect calmness. With a calloused old hand on his shoulder, and the other pointing up to the heavens; he said, “All is well, the North Star still shines.” For all who have lost their way: Look up, all is well, God’s Word has never failed.

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
