Rev. Ray and Pat Amos
2 Timothy 2:19
“Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His . . .”
Bessie was talking about her husband as Pat and I took her to the hospital to visit him. “Sam is real bad about reading the Bible,” she said. Now, for those who do not understand the passing language of the mountains, Bessie was saying that Sam spent a lot of time reading the Bible. He had lost his legs and was shut-in at home; yet he was grounded in the Scriptures.
A Christian who is grounded in Scripture has rooted him or herself in the Bible. The Scripture guides us in sensible and reasonable decisions about life. It lights the pathway when the road is dark and frightening. “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Paul wrote that God desires for us to be grounded in Love. That means that wherever my feet are planted, in whatever situation that I may be in today; I know (without doubt) that I am loved by God. Today, even in my troubles, I can stand upon Christ the Solid Rock.
We are living in testing times and we had better be grounded in knowing who we are, and who Jesus is. There is a little but powerful two letter word that we can only overcome by being firmly planted in Christ. It was the first temptation that Jesus faced after His baptism. He had heard His Father say, “This is my Son…” Then of all things the Devil did challenge, “If you are the Son of God…”
The “If” word comes around a lot; “If you were a Christian…. “You can fill in the blank with any number of judgmental statements. I know a man that some self-righteous folks judged and hurt real bad. They called him a drunk, and a troublemaker; when he wasn’t. He wasn’t accepted very well in worship; the leaders were rude and judgmental. He was called a liberal by one side and a fundamental by others; He really was neither, He was kind when others were mean spirited, and he always had a heart of Love. His name is Jesus.
I hope that we will be “real bad” about reading the Bible, and that we will be rooted and grounded in the Word of God. If you have come to Jesus, you are guaranteed acceptance if you will love and trust Him. Know that you are a Child of God; and let no one plant an “if” in your heart.
