We regularly are called upon by men and women who have spent lots of time in prison. Many face homelessness upon release due to multiple reasons. Some have the ‘stigma’ attached as being a convicted felon. This severely limits ability to secure gainful employment. Some have narcotic charges on their records. Some are convicted sex offenders of varied status. Some have been left behind in a time zone that is long vanished.
We have been trying to help a gentleman who is 75 years old, and was released 4 months ago after being incarcerated 40 years ( 1978-2018 ) for multiple bank robberies. He is quick to tell you no violence was involved and no one was physically injured. He doesn’t understand computers and cell phones and all the modern technology. “ I was in prison and you visited me.” JESUS

Thanks to Cassidy UMC for providing approximately 100 winter coats. This was result of ‘ meals for coats ‘ in which participants bartered coats for their dinner. A neat idea!

Pictured here with Pastor Regina, Tonya A. came by later to receive ashes as Lenten journey begins. She was working during our noon service. She is excited to say she has worked diligently, and lost 96 pounds in the past year. Tonya was baptized at Shades and is a member of our congregation.

Today we are dealing with a 75 year old man who has spent 40 years incarcerated . He is homeless and such a kind and humble man. We’re trying to locate permanent housing.
A seventy year old woman was born in Croatia and moved to US as a young girl. Has been here 50 plus years. She had had gainful employment and paid into social security over the years. She has her birth certificate from Croatia. She’s trying to draw her SS. We’ve exhausted all our efforts in trying to assist her. She was even taken to an immigration office in SC which was recommended by legal aid, and could not get in the door because she has no photo ID. She has to have some documentation proving why she is in the country. Can anyone help me?
Dealing with 3 terminally ill men and opening tonight as a warming station. Dealing with literal life and death, and an ‘interested citizen’ from another city calling all day to argue about what we believe about homosexuality!!! Where is the priority?

Thankful to First Presbyterian Church on Church Circle for a donation of $178.90 today. This is in response to “5 cents a meal in February.” Blessed to be a blessing in our downtown community.
Pray tonight for a longtime friend, Rev. Don Large who is experiencing very serious health issues and is hospitalized. His family sincerely requests no visits , and deeply appreciate your concern.
Volunteers and any interested persons are invited to a one hour workshop Tuesday , March 5 at 4pm. This will inform us how to deal with blood borne pathogens, such as Hep A and HIV. This is important considering our daily involvement with a transient and addicted community.
“GIVING UP FOR LENT”
LENT
Matthew 6:16-18
Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. Shades of Grace congregation currently is ministering to at least five members who are dealing with terminal illnesses. Some are homeless and find relief by sleeping during the days in our building. Just a cold drink of insure or a pack of crackers… and these folk are so grateful.
Our faith community consists of homeless folk, convicted felons, various offenders, single parents, a few professionals, a good crowd of blue collar and regular working folk. There are biracial couples and friends of alternative lifestyles. There are ex-cons and several pastors who are faithful servants for the kingdom. And the rest are just plain ol’ regular folk trying to share Jesus’ message of radical hospitality with a world that so often feels out of place.
God’s Living Room is a place they can all be ‘family’ and discover hope. (read the parable of the fishing net that is cast and draws in every manner of creation.) This is church! Join me at 4 p.m. Sunday for worship, and every M-F for miracles that only can be done by the Divine!
Donations are welcome at Shades of Grace. Many homeless walk miles and walk all night because they are afraid of being robbed or attacked. Some are learning to restructure their lives, back to work . . . so they need new shoes, clothes, educational programs, an ID card, some type of residence and other resources for a foundation to re-join society. Shades of Grace does what Jesus would do, Gives the lost, least, last and lonely that hope and faith, showing them that someone cares. Shades of Grace depends on donations and volunteers.

Pastor Will Shewey Prays for Us
As your head rests upon a pillow tonight,
breathe a prayer of intercession and thanksgiving.
Many things about tomorrow we will not understand.
Events of this day can’t be understood.
Rest in knowledge that He who keeps His people
neither slumbers or sleeps,
and secret things belong to Him.
If it be God’s will, we will awaken
to mercies new for the morning.
Though we walk through the waters,
they shall not overflow us.
Lord, forgive those who have fallen so far
from the place of peace and comfort.
Give courage to those making
difficult lifesaving choices.
Be near those dying and with those
preparing to go forth in a new reality.
And bless your holy church,
people called by your name,
that it may always be a light in darkness,
and stand on the side of unconditional love. Amen
