Isaiah 46:9

“Remember the things of long ago, for I am God….”

When I was a child at Pearisburg Elementary School they would call our bus number when it was time to go home: “Number 8, Bunker Hill and Around the Mountain.” How I loved hearing those words. Going home was a little trip to heaven for me. I remember when we first moved to the mountain. I was in line for the bus, but the teacher (who did not know that we had moved) put me in another line. The bus driver saw what was happening and came to my rescue.

I loved the mountain. In many ways I believe it helped shape the ministry that I love so much today. I guess you could you expect a Mountain named “Angel’s Rest” to do that. It wasn’t hard for a boy to believe that God’s breath swayed the trees, or that every critter I encountered was given life by God.

I found some fossils that had sea shells in them. How did they get so high on the mountain? The Bible said that the world was flooded, that was a good enough explanation for a little boy. (Now I know some of you have much better answers than that, but please let me enjoy my memories.) I never worried about evolution; the mountain had a manufacturing label on it that even a child could read. It said, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

It was the people that made the mountain home. Without their love and presence it would have been majestic, but not home. I had a wonderful family life, and every child should have an Aunt Clara to show you all the hidden treasures that are found in the simple things.

“There’s a land beyond the river, that we call the sweet forever.” The very presence of Christ makes it Heaven, and the people we love make it home. Another song says that “Heaven is getting sweeter all the time.” It is important to know that we are in line for the right bus.

“Lord, in this world there seems to be so many life buses going different directions. Please watch out for us, and make sure that we get on the right one. Amen”
