Psalm 19:12
“…they returned to their country by another route.”
“I shall be telling this with a sigh, somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. -Robert Frost
We know the experience of traveling at a good speed down the highway when suddenly everything comes to a halt. When that happens on the interstate around here, I will take the next exit and travel a back road to where I am going. The only problem is that everybody else is doing the same thing.
Jesus taught us that we can spiritually get tied up and lost in traffic. He spoke of a wide and crowded way of life that many choose to take. It can be filled with pleasures and excitement, but it can also take us away from everyone and everything that makes life good. The Bible teaches that sin has its pleasure, but it is only for a season. Sin is always a dead end road.
One hot summer day I was driving home from Duke in a car that had no air conditioner. With windows down I got into stop and go traffic in Greensboro. It was one of those days when a person might want to sing the hymn, “I Feel Like Traveling On,” but can’t go anywhere because of being stuck in traffic. That day I was traveling at a turtle’s pace behind a tractor-trailer that was hauling pigs. We can’t always choose the traffic that we share life’s highway with (sometimes it just stinks), but we can choose what road we will travel.
Jesus said that the road that leads to life is narrow, and only a few find it (Those who believe it and want it). May we, by the grace of God, choose the road less traveled. It has been a long time since I have heard the old song:
“The Lord has been so good to me
I feel like traveling on
Until that blessed home I see
I feel like traveling on.
Yes, I feel like traveling on
I feel like traveling on
My heavenly home is bright and fair
I feel like traveling on.”
