“God and Friends Who Listen”
“But if I were you, I would appeal to God; I would lay my cause before him.” Job 5:8
“If I were you,” or “If I were in your place, I would…” These are the words that are easier to say than to hear. They are usually spoken from a far different perspective than the troubled soul who is not you.
It was a sight to be pitied, and at the same time a beautiful scene. A cat lay hurt by the side of the road as cars went speeding by. Sitting beside the cat was a dog, a friend, who was waiting and caring until help came from somewhere. The little Samaritan did not bark out advice, but whimpered, and licked the wounds as though they were his own.
The Jobs of life need a friend more than casual advice. A shared tear can say more than a thousand words that can’t feel pain. It isn’t a hymn, but there are many who can sing, “Everybody’s talking at me, I don’t hear a word their saying; only the echoes of my mind. People stop and stare, I can’t see their faces; only the shadows of their eyes.”
Thank you Lord Jesus. You did not say, “If I were in your place.” You came and took my place. You carried my cross, died my death so that I might have your life. “There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24)
