“You Have Strengthened Faltering Knees”
“Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees” (Job 4:4). The Moffatt Translation says, “Your words have put people back on their feet.”
You can knock a man down in this world, but you can’t kick him back up.
They were words that should have been in praise of a person’s goodness, but the speaker used them to push the sword a little deeper in the soul of a good man. The kind man was down, hurting and couldn’t get back up. His miserable comforter was saying, “In your day you were generous and helpful to so many. You got people back up on their feet, but you can’t help yourself.”
Even though the words were not kindly spoken; they still were a great compliment to this man who had been found “perfect and upright” in the sight of the Lord. The man who could have lived for himself with great pleasure had given so much to help others get their life back.
Who are the people who helped us when we were down? Who lifted our spirit out of depression, gave us another chance; or perhaps the break that we needed? Who stayed around when everyone else left? Who wiped the tears from our eyes, and showed us that our smile was only sleeping a little while? I thank God for all those people in my life.
The hymn says, “Help me in all the work I do to ever be sincere and true, and know that all I’d do for you must needs be done for others.”
Job was in good company. They would say of our Lord, “He saved others, but he cannot save himself.” Walk closely with Jesus and you are soon to learn the meaning of a faith that is committed to helping people back up, and putting them on their feet again. We can begin with a simple rule for all who follow Christ: “Do (and Speak) no harm.”
