DEVOTION FOR TODAY, July 11, 2019

“Murmur”

“You have a heart murmur.” With those words the Doctor continued to speak: “I wouldn’t worry too much about it. It is slight and half the population has one.” He must have been right; that was over thirty years ago. I am just a layman on the subject, but I know that for many people it is a far more serious matter. How long has it been, or have we ever, paused to thank God for the good cardiologists who are in the daily work of healing and helping broken hearts?

There is another kind of murmur that is extremely dangerous; and I imagine that most of the population has a tendency for it. I am talking about a “Soul Murmur.”

The Psalmist wrote about God’s children in the wilderness, saying, “They murmured in their tents, and did not obey the voice of the Lord.”

Murmur, Mr. Webster says it is “a low indistinct but often continuous sound.” The problem is not the murmur; the murmur is an indication that something is wrong in our own soul. A life at peace does not murmur and grumble.

A little murmur every now and then may seem excusable, but caution: A murmur against life today can grow into a murmur against God tomorrow; and soon after will follow disobedience to the voice of the Lord. Paul warns us of the serious dangers of having a “Soul Murmur,” (see 1 Corinthians 10:10).

There are medicines that can be taken for this. I would suggest that we take an, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances” at least once a day. (see Philippians 4:11)

“When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.”
