DEVOTION FOR TODAY, July 6, 2019

“…You May Be Sure That Your Sin Will Find You Out.”

I was in the sixth grade when my friend and I had the bicycle wreck. He got the stitches, and I got the broken arm. I was riding on the handlebar and he was pedaling. That was when a foot in the spokes ruined the day. It was a wreck that was right up there with “The Wreck of the Old 97.”

During that summer I laid away a new bike at Western Auto. It was paid for from my newspaper route, and selling “pop bottles” at the local market. (For those who are from another time, pop bottles were glass soft drink bottles. Good money in those days.) The final payment was made at the same time the cast was removed from my arm. That black Schwinn bike with chrome fenders was a beauty.

Some lessons are just hard to learn. I was coasting down Curve Road with both hands in the air when it happened. That first wreck was bad enough, but this time I wasn’t sure that I would survive. By the time that I saw the truck it was just too late; there wasn’t a thing that I could do. This was serious trouble. There, sitting at the foot of the hill in the town truck was my Dad. He was shaking his finger at me with a “Just wait until I get home look.”

The Bible says, “Be sure that your sins will find you out.” It was true that day, and it still is. We have all been blessed with a lot of mercy and grace. We should never continue to sin because we think that it will not hurt us, or that we can get away with it. To sin, or not to sin, is a deliberate choice we make. What will we choose today?
