“Showing Kindness”
David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” 2 Samuel 9:1
“There is Jo Pye weed.” When Pat said those words yesterday, we immediately started talking about two dear friends. The New England Native American healer, Jo Pye, used the weed as a cure for many ailments; but for us it means that summer is already getting shorter and that it is time for old friends to visit. Our friends had a family member who would visit each year when the Jo Pye Weed bloomed. Now it is an annual and natural memorial that always leads into conversation about two angels in our life (Ruth and Wanda, How we miss you.)
Our creator gave us senses that are wired into our memories. Think about it: The taste of a certain food, a fragrance, a song on the radio, an old cliché that you haven’t heard in a long time, the warmth of a summer field, or an autumn breeze; these things can place your heart on memory lane.
When David thought of his old friend Jonathan; he wondered if there was anyone left in the family that he could show kindness to. I read in Acts that the kind deeds that Cornelius did for God’s people came up as a memorial before the Lord. I often think of the kindnesses of people that I have known from childhood up (Innumerable). As an old song says, we do live on the love of the common people; and more than that, we live in the Love of God.
Jesus paid for the abundant life we have. Now, we live that life in daily installments of Love and deeds of kindness. The unforgettable things in life are usually those simple things that make the day a little lighter, and the nights a little brighter. Perhaps today is a Remembering Day. Who are these people in your life? Is there anyone that you can show kindness to in their memory?
It is just a weed along the side of the road that Pat and I call a beautiful flower. I wonder if they are along the golden street in Heaven as a reminder that friends are friends forever; and that the kindness we show to one another we do unto the Lord.
Grace and Peace,
Rev Ray
