“But you are…a peculiar people…”

Why is it so easy to think of people who are exceptionally happy in their faith as the ones who are a little off?

I was in line at the post office, and ahead of me was a strange but delightful lady who was dressed to match a box of crayons. She was behind two men in their business suits who were seriously discussing life’s troubles. “Oh well,” one man said, “You can’t live forever!” She punched him in the back, and when he turned to give her that “who are you” look; she said, “Yes you can, Yes you can live forever.” She told him about Jesus and eternal life. He seemed relieved to hear the postal clerk ask, “Can I help the next customer?” All I could think was, “You go girl.”

I understand that peculiar means a special people; but it also means unusual or odd. Christianity doesn’t require us to be weird, but why shouldn’t we be happy and excited about who we are in Christ. If we had a choice to join the gloom and doom club in the postal line, or dance with Miss Crayola; what would we do? Would we feel more normal if we joined the gloom?

Some of the greatest servants that our Lord has sent out into the world are the ones who put a smile on your face when you see them coming. It is quite a gift from God to be able to lift up someone’s heavy heart, to restore a smile beneath their tears, and to resuscitate the breath of laughter.

When Jesus walked the earth He showed us what the original normal was: It was a good world, a place of happiness and joy, a place where people loved and laughed and fellowshipped at the table. When the world was created, then the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy (Job 38:7).

Does our life show the original normal of God’s world?

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
