Luke 9:57

DEVOTION FOR TODAY, August 17, 2019

“And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.”

With the plane accident at our airport this week, and all the attention that it has received, we are reminded of a great truth: It doesn’t matter if we are rich and famous, or poor and unknown, life is fragile.

A miracle happened in my life the other day. I made it all the way through Elk Avenue with all green lights. (Elk Avenue is Elizabethton’s long street of traffic lights.)

Jesus often spoke of life in terms of the streets that we travel. Some roads are wide and heavily traveled, and others are narrow with less traffic. He taught us that we must pay attention to where the street is taking us; and that the popular way can be an eternal dead end.

No one gets through life with all green lights. There are spiritual red lights along the way. Things happen that causes us to stop for a moment and remember that there is a time when we all will reach a destination. Are we traveling the road that is going the direction that we want to go? This doesn’t mean that the Heavenly highway must look like a church parking lot, but it should be a way that Jesus can joyfully walk with us.

On the day of the plane accident the media kept telling the same news a hundred different ways. It was a flashing red light for a lot of people who know the Earnhardt name. Now the road is blocked for a few days and neighbors have to find alternate routes. When I pray “Lead me not into temptation,” I am asking the Lord to block the road if it is one that I shouldn’t be on.

We are thankful that everyone is okay. Some call them lucky, but we know better. They were truly blessed; we all are. Well, the new day is here, and the light is green; let’s get going.

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
