1 Peter 1:12
DEVOTION FOR TODAY, August 20, 2019
“…things which angels desire to look into.”
Today’s verse is somewhat haunting to me. Heaven is ablaze with the excitement of redemption, and angels are wondering about a gospel that they can never experience. Yet, on earth we can take it so lightly. The gospel is celebrated in Heaven, and needed on earth.
Who else is better at telling the story of Christ’s redemptive love than the ones who have been redeemed? The strength of every local church is not its worship style, programs, and not the pastor, but in the proven results of the Gospel: lives that have been truly changed by the power of Jesus Christ. It is said that the proof is in the pudding; in the church, “the proof is in the pews.”
A living church never loses its wonder of what God can do because each person is a wonder. We should be constantly amazed at the ways that God is working to redeem the world, and our little piece of it. In the book of Acts, ordinary people became powerful enough to “Turn the World Upside Down.” They did it because they had experienced what angels could only wonder about: To be lost and found, made clean from the filth of sin, the hopeless found a reason for living, and the sting of death lost its threating power.
Let the church sing, “Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his Name!
Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done;
His mercy sure, from age to age to same;
His holy Name–the Lord, the Mighty One”
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
