Psalms 84:1-2

THOUGHT FOR TODAY, September 11, 2019

“How amiable is your dwelling place. My soul longs and yearns…and cries out for the living God.”

The evening was almost night, and she sat by a dimly lit light. There was a crackle of burning wood in the stove. The pictures that hung on wall paper came to life in a thousand memories. Time had made a change in the home place, and her tears were both happy and sad. The radio had a haunting sound at night. It was like a faint whistle mixed with static and the fading in and out of distant hymns.

In her hands was a Bible. With vision mostly gone, she held the worn cover and time faded pages that had been a lamp for the path, and a sword against the devil. That Bible had guided generations of her family to the “Pearly Gates,” and she would be the last one to close the book and complete the unbroken circle.

She was lonely, but never alone. The old collie was already sleeping on the floor by the side of the bed. The feather mattress and the heavy quilt would feel good as the fire burned itself to sleep. She lovingly closed the Bible and reverently placed it on the table. Holding it was like holding the hand of God.

“How amiable is your dwelling place. My soul longs and yearns…and cries out for the living God.” (Psalms 84:1-2)

Some of us can go to that lovely place where loved ones lived and prayed. We knew the woman in that little house that she called, “Home Sweet Home.” Those blessed examples of peace on earth are growing rare in this world. We are among the blessed who were made rich with treasures that did not sparkle, but glowed with the warmth of love.

A house can be beautiful without love, but it is the warming glow of kindred hearts that makes a home amiable. Memories mean a lot to me, and I’m sure they mean a lot to you also. Treasure each one as a gift from God, and be thankful. Take some time today to remember the people that God made special to you.

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
