Proverbs 28:13

THOUGHT FOR TODAY, November 16, 2019

“People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.”

“People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.” Proverbs 28:13

It was getting dark as we walked up the steps into the church. I looked down and saw something near the basement window. I knew that he was in the building somewhere, and wondered if I should say anything. Knowing who he was I didn’t think he would cause any trouble, but I would watch.

The singing began and it was a good service. I decided that I should tell everyone about the intruder since I was certain that he was probably watching us. The sermon was about hidden sin in our lives; so I said, “There is a snake somewhere in this church, and you haven’t worried because you were unaware of it. I saw where it shed its skin as it crawled under the building.” It did not matter that I reassured them that it was a harmless black snake; a couple of ladies started gathering their things to leave, but they didn’t. (They told me later that they were afraid of meeting it if they slipped out.)

That not only is a true story, it is also a true fact. From the first time in Genesis when we heard of a serpent that was “more subtle” than any other, even unto now, we forget that he is always lurking nearby. We can become comfortable with sin that we do not see until someone points it out. A preacher friend would sometime say to the people, “I have come to make you uncomfortable, so that you can be comforted by the Lord.”

Once in a while we need to be reminded that sin is in the house; and it doesn’t worry us because we have forgotten and become unaware of it. The good news is that Jesus is the great exterminator of the evil that is lurking around our life.

The Hymn prays,
”Forgive the sins I have confessed to Thee.
Forgive the secret sins I do not see
Guide me, love me and my keeper be
Dear Lord, forgive…”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
