Psalm 118:12
THOUGHT FOR TODAY, November 20, 2019
They compassed me about like bees: they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.”
We hid behind the fence (like that was going to protect us). There were several of them and only two of us. We were bigger than they were and we hoped that was to our advantage. The plan was that on the count of three we would unleash our artillery of rocks, and then run like the wind.
The rocks were right on target and wow did we ever make them mad. They were faster than we anticipated and they chased us down like hounds on a hunt. They caught up to my cousin and I heard him yell out in pain. I could turn back to help him or keep on going. I decided to keep on going, but it was too late; they had me too.
I can still hear him calling out to his aunt as we ran home, “Annie, get the Big G.” We were near North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, and in that part of the world the cure for a hornet attack was “Big G” Snuff applied to the stings. Since those days I have gotten into a few human hornet nests that hurt so much that I needed the relief of another “Big G”; I needed God.
We asked for that trouble, but there are those times when the “yellow jackets” attacked and we had no idea where they came from. We also have had days when some people or unexpected troubles attacked from every side. It wasn’t provoked, you didn’t see it coming; but suddenly you were swatting at life’s bees while wondering, “Why.” The Bible says, “They surrounded me like bees.” (Psalm 118:12)
Paul instructed us to take the shield of faith that we might be able to quench the fiery darts of the wicked. Unless we do, we may allow life’s aggravations and pains to destroy us. “This too shall pass” isn’t a scripture, but we know it will. Storms don’t last forever, the night will turn to day; and joy comes in the morning.
I hope today brings you sweet honey from the rock (Psalm 81:16); and, if you get stung, we know who to run to.
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
