Matthew 5:8
DEVOTION FOR TODAY, November 27, 2019
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
In 1976 I became friends with a young man who had survived a terrible accident. It left him with slowness of motor and mental skills, but his faith was quick and strong. His initials were T.G. and he proudly wore a pin that said, “Try God.” If anyone asked his name, he would tell them, “T.G.” and then, point to his pin and say with slow and sure words, “Try God.”
I do not understand many of the things that I encounter in this life; “now I see through a glass darkly.” I know that God is real, and that He is love. When I meet the TG’s of life I wonder: Has God stationed them along our paths to remind us that life is more than the hustle and bustle that blisters our soul? I believe that the pure in heart add another jewel of great worth to each life they touch. My life is richer because once I had a friend who reminded me daily to TRY GOD.
Twenty years later I was passing through Tuscaloosa, Alabama and stopped at the golden arches for some fine dining. While standing in line, someone behind me said, “Try God.” In a city where the only one who knew me was God, I turned to see an old friend from days gone by in Southwest Virginia. He was still wearing his pin and recommending the one who had been his greatest help in time of trouble. We hugged and laughed; and God winked.
Now, let us all turn to page 46 in the Cokesbury Hymnal: “Tho’ oft I cannot understand the way Thou leadest me; I question not Thy way o Lord, but leave it all to Thee…Have Thou Thy way in all my life, Till I become like Thee.”
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
