“Called by Name”
Aunt Clare often gave names to her farm animals. I think of her when I read the creation story. “And whatever Adam called each living creature that was its name.” A created thing was not considered complete until it had a name.
When Jesus was born the angel instructed Joseph to call him Jesus. The name means Savior; “For he shall save us from our sin.”
Someone gave each of us the gift of a name. Each one has a story. Our names are often about family, friends and memories.
I met a pastor a few years ago who asked my name. When I told him, he said, “Amos, That’s a good prophet’s name, I will remember it.” The next time we met he called me “Brother Jeremiah.”
Sometimes Dad would greet a person with a smile and a handshake, “Amos is my name, I reckon you know yours.” What is most important is that the Lord knows our name,
Isaiah wrote, “Now this is what the Lord, the one who created you says, ‘Do not fear for I have redeemed you…I HAVE CALLED YOU BY YOUR NAME; you are mine…you are precious in my sight and honored, and I love you.” It is very comforting to know that we have a personal God who knows us by name. We are not someone lost in the mass of the human race.
When you are lost; listen for your name to be called by the searching Shepherd. If you are afraid; he calls you by name with a comforting voice. The sad and lonely hear their name with compassion; and the down and out are called by their name to rise up and live as a child of God.
“When the Savior calls I will answer
When He calls for me I will hear
When the Savior calls I will answer
I’ll be somewhere listening for my name”
