“GOD’S EVERYDAY GIFTS”

Paul wrote, “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (8:31-32).

There is no doubt; God is for us. Paul’s “these things” refer to the blessings he has outlined in verses 8-30: In Christ Jesus there is no condemnation (vv. 1-2). God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit indwell us (vv. 9-11). We are not left as orphans (vv. 15-17; John 14:18). There is a future glory that encompasses the redemption of the body (vv. 18-25). The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us (vv. 26-27).

As if these are not enough, Paul goes on to list four other blessings under the “all things” of Romans 8:32: God justifies us (vv. 32-33). Christ makes intercession for us (v. 34; 1 John 2:1-2). We are more than conquerors through Jesus (vv. 35-37). We are cradled in the love of God and Christ (vv. 38-39).

At this time of the year, much of the world pays homage (at least visibly) to God’s gift of his Son. But the Babe in the manger grew into a man who secured for us gifts that are new every morning. The question is: Are we cherishing these gifts, praising God and Christ for them, and sharing the good news about them with all who will hear?

CONNECTIONS

1. What gift from God will you use today in your struggle with the flesh?

2. What does Jude tell us we should do to keep ourselves in the love of God (Jude 20-23).
