Hebrews 10:25
DEVOTION FOR TODAY, January 3, 2020
“And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.”
The old plane was climbing slow and steep. That was when the passenger smelled gasoline as it slowly dripped from beneath the dashboard. The pilot took a rag and held it where the gas was leaking, as he said, “It will stop when we level off.” What made matters worse was that the gas gage didn’t work either.
Most people would not want to fly on that plane; yet some go about daily life with a leaky faith. Paul wrote of a day in later times when some will abandon the faith. The scary thought is that it can happen so gradually that we might not even notice until one day when life is crashing and the empty heart is realized.
Many of us grew up, and raised our children, in a culture where missing church wasn’t an option. It was one of the ways that faith was maintained and kept strong for whatever came our way. We need the assembling of ourselves together in days like these. It is time to strengthen the feeble knees and Christian character; and coming together as the church is one way that it is done.
How is our prayer life these days? We make sure that our phones are charged, but have you checked the bars on your prayer life lately? Are you ready to pray in an instant, or would you have to get “prayed up” first?
How deep are our roots into the heart of God? If we refuse to answer that question today, the storms of life will answer for us. Surface religion may feel good, and require little, but neither can it stand when the wind blows hard against us. There is a place of quiet rest near to the heart of God, and we can go there if we are willing reach for it with sacrifice and longing hearts.
If we stand close together, as Christians should, we can lean on each other when the wind blows and all seems dark. We are three days into the New Year; Sunday is coming, let’s get started right.
