“It’s Time to Go Home”
We stood at the airport and watched the plane rumble down the runway as it carried loved ones to a distant place. We waved at the plane and watched as it grew smaller in the sky. While gazing at what we could no longer see, someone said, “It’s time to go home.”
When Jesus ascended into Heaven, the disciples watched as he disappeared on a cloud. Then the angels asked, “Why are you standing here staring into heaven? He will return the same way you saw him go!”
Lately we have been looking toward Heaven a lot as loved ones are taking their heavenly flight. We say that they are gone; but gone where? Not out if existence, but home. Like Lazarus they were carried by the angels into the presence of God.
The beautiful old song says, “The latest sun is sinking fast, my race has nearly run; my strongest trials now are past, my triumph is begun. O come, Angel Band, come and around me stand; O bear me away on your snowy wings to my immortal home.”
Somewhere in a distant place there is a group of people who are waiting for a plane to appear in the sky. They are excited about this glad reunion day. And somewhere on an unclouded day saints are gathering by the crystal river in joyful anticipation: another loved one is coming home. Jesus said of himself, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me…then your grief will turn to joy.” Those words are true for every believer who has joined the Heavenly throng, and are now home.
It is true: We don’t have to say goodbye to our loved ones; because of Jesus we can say, “See you later” (and we will).
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
