“My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less”
Paul said, “For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” As Edward Mote (1834) reminds us, “All other ground is sinking sand.”
Mote said of himself: “So ignorant was I that I did not know there was a God. My Sundays were spent on the streets (of London) in play.” Overcoming a bad start in life, Mote became a writer and minister. This hymn captures the true hope of every true believer.
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
Refrain: On Christ, the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand.
Verses 2-4 of the song remind us of Paul’s words: “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:1-2).
When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
