1 Samuel 12:23

DEVOTION FOR TODAY, January 13, 2020

“Far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you.”

They had traveled for two days looking for him. Time was running out and he had to be found soon. Each step became more desperate; this was life and death; “someone said that he was he was just down the street; “Hurry, we have got to tell him! There he is!” Falling down before him in exhaustion and in worship they spoke, “The one you love is sick.”

That was enough; nothing more to do, they could return home knowing that they had done their best to help a hurting friend: they had told it to Jesus. Notice the simplicity of their heart felt prayer. Their faith was strong enough to just tell it to Jesus and leave it there, “Lord, the one that you love is sick.” (John 11:3)

We sometimes say to a troubled soul, “I wish that I could do more, but I will pray for you.” Can we do more than genially pray for a person? Prayer may lead us to other ways of reaching out and helping, but what can be greater than bringing a person to God in prayer?

We do not know the names of these who had such praying care; but their efforts to reach the Lord are forever recorded in God’s Word. In a world where the word “praying” is in danger of becoming a meaningless cliché, it is time to restore it to the high place of Holy Work that it is.

The Bible says, “Far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you.” (1 Samuel 12:23)

I remember a hymn from childhood that had an impact on my life:

“When Jesus has found you, tell others the story,
That my loving Savior is your Savior, too;
Then pray that your Savior may bring them to glory,
And prayer will be answered– ’twas answered for you!

For you I am praying,
For you I am praying,
For you I am praying,
I’m praying for you.”
