“…there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother”

Many years ago I heard a story that went something like this:
The little chapel kept its doors unlocked even though it was in a part of the city where there seemed to be a lot of trouble. Each evening a man slipped through the doors and was inside (usually alone) for a short while. The pastor across the street became curious and decided to slip into the chapel and see what the man was doing. He was moved by what he saw.

Standing at the altar was the man who had plenty scars from a rough life. His cap was removed and the man was looking up and saying, “Jesus, this is Jim; Jesus, this is Jim.” One evening as he exited the chapel into the street he stepped into the path of a car. Jim was seriously injured and was taken to the city hospital where he was treated and placed in the vagrancy ward.

When the pastor checked on him the nurse said that the usually difficult ward had become pleasant since Jim had come. He had a calming effect on everyone. It was as though he had a friendship with God and brought a little bit of Heaven with him.

The pastor visited and wondered how this man who was poor and homeless had such a soothing spirit among the other patients. As they talked, Jim told him about the one who visited his hospital bedside every evening. About dark the visitor would come into the room and say, “Jim, this is Jesus; Jim, this is Jesus.”

Christianity is a relationship with the Living Christ. He will never leave us alone under any circumstance. Do you know Jesus personally? He a friend that sticks closer than a brother. Do you remember this song?

“Is your burden heavy as you bear it all alone?
Does the road you travel, harbor dangers yet unknown?
Are you growing weary in the struggle of it all?
Jesus will help you when on his name you call.

He’s always there hearing every prayer, faithful and true
Walking by our side, in his love we hide all the day through
When you get discouraged just remember what to do
Reach out to Jesus, he’s reaching out to you.”

And He is with you today.

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
