Zechariah 10:8

DEVOTION FOR TODAY, January 17, 2020

“I will whistle for them, and gather them, for I have redeemed them.”

“In that day the LORD will whistle for the fly that is at the end of the streams of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. And they will all come…” Isaiah 17:18-19

A group of folks gather in a room for a meeting. Refreshments are on the table, friends are in conversations, and laughter is abundant. Then the speaker stands up, but no one notices as fellowship continues. It nearly always happens: The Master has equipped someone with the gift of whistle and suddenly all grows quite.

It is interesting to see how many times that the Lord whistles in the Bible. Can you imagine the bee keeper whistling for the bees to come, or the exterminator whistling for the fly? It is a simple fact that all the creatures are quick to answer God’s whistle and call; with the exception of one. We humans are often slow to hear God, and slower to answer.

A stray dog went by the house and I whistled for it. With head pointed forward it kept going as though my whistle meant nothing. Is that how I would treat God if he whistled for me? One whistle is all it takes to get my dog Duke by my side; but then, he and I are best friends. That is what it takes: a friendship with God. “When I whistle to them, they will come running, for I have redeemed them.”

The old man stood on his porch on a summer day. A young preacher was standing by his side. “See my old dog sleeping out on the hill,” he asked. The young man said that he did. He whistled and said, “Come here boy;” and the dog answered his master’s voice, and with a limping run he came to the porch. With a pat on the dog’s head, the old man said, “One day soon, the Good Master is going to whistle and call my name. I plan to do what my dog just did; I’m going to Him.” “When I whistle to them, they will come running, for I have redeemed them.”

“We heed, O Lord, your summons,
and answer: Here are we!
Send us upon your errand,
let us your servants be.
Our strength is dust and ashes,
our years a passing hour;
but you can use our weakness
to magnify your power.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
