A SONG A DAY, March 31, 2020

“Song of the Day, Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me”

Yesterday’s hymn was about following the footprints of Jesus wherever they might lead. Today’s song is about navigating life’s storms. Each looks at the believer’s life using two different metaphors, but both teach the same lesson: We are safe with Jesus whatever life might throw at us.

Edward Hopper was a Presbyterian minister. After pastoring two churches in New York City, he pastored a small church, Church of Sea and Land, in the New York harbor, ministering to many sailors. It was while he was there that he wrote this hymn anonymously. When asked to write a hymn for the Seamen’s Friend Society, he instead read this already published hymn. It was then that the people, who already knew this song, became aware of its author.

Jesus, Savior, pilot me,
Over life’s tempestuous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll,
Hiding rock and treach’rous shoal;
Chart and compass come from Thee:
Jesus, Savior, pilot me!

As a mother stills her child,
Thou canst hush the ocean wild;
Boist’rous waves obey Thy will
When Thou say’st to them, “Be still!”
Wondrous Sov’reign of the sea,
Jesus, Saviour, pilot me!

When at last I near the shore,
And the fearful breakers roar
‘Twixt me and the peaceful rest,
Then, while leaning on Thy breast,
May I hear Thee say to me,
“Fear not, I will pilot thee!”

One day Jesus had been preaching to the masses—well, let’s let Mark tell the story: “On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, ‘Let us go across to the other side.’ And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”

When Jesus pilots our lives, we need not fear any storm, including death.
