Matthew 7:11

DEVOTION FOR TODAY, October 29, 2020

“…how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

The name Matthew means “gift of God.” He seemed to like the word gifts in the gospel. Luke does not use the word gifts, but instead he translates it, “How much more shall your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to them that ask.”

Together these two scriptures offer us the most beautiful understanding of our gift giving God. We have all received innumerable gifts from God. When Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, he gave us the source of all good gifts.

Someone has said that the Holy Spirit is what puts the “umph” in Christianity. The truth is that the Holy Spirit puts the “everything” in Christianity. He gives everything we need to have an abundant life in Christ.

“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” This important question is found in Acts 19:2; and is for every Christian to answer.

E.S. Jones has pointed out that we all need the oil of the Holy Spirit in our lives or we will become like a badly squeaking oil well pump. He said, “Unless our own machinery is well-oiled and smooth running, people will not believe that we have oil for others.” (Let the church say Amen!)

A lot of us are tired and a bit squeaky as we try to keep going in strange and difficult times. Perhaps we need a recharge. Sometimes we think we are bad, but we are not; we may just be empty. Pray to receive a refreshing of the gift of God.

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
