“Why Am I Discouraged”
I saw him coming up the walk to our front door. He is not welcome in our house, and he knows it. I hate to say it, but he is a troublemaker, and I was not going to put up with him. The doorbell rang and I opened the door. There he stood, and he even had his suitcase as though he was going to stay. I told him to get lost and slammed the door in his face. It felt surprisingly good: I refuse to allow discouragement into our house.
One of the oldest tools in the Devil’s box is discouragement. He first used it on Cain. The Bible said that his countenance fell (we call it pouting). The thing with discouragement is that he never comes alone. Sin tags along close by and lurks around ready to jump in.
Anyone with a success story probably has many more discouragement stories to tell. We all have blue days and depressing times, but we need not let them get us down. The psalmist asked, “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad?” Then he said, “I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again.”
Child of God remember that you have good friends living with you. Keep the sunshine of Love and laughter in your heart. Smile, and be pleasant, and work hard and faithfully: that will leave no time for singing the blues. If discouragement keeps on knocking, why not ask Jesus to get the door. That should take care of things.
“Why should I feel discouraged?
Why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart be lonely?
And long for heaven and home
When Jesus is my portion
My constant friend, is he
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me.”
