Matthew 1:1
DEVOTION FOR TODAY, December 15, 2020
“An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”
I once read that there is not one useless star in the heavens. I would like to add that neither is there one insignificant life on earth. I thought about that this morning as I read what I call “the beget section” of Matthew 1:1-17. I tried to pay a little more attention this time while praying, “Lord, what do these things mean today?” After all, God did not devote these seventeen verses in the Bible for no purpose.
Right away we realize that God is a promise keeper. Consider the words, “Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah.” Those words fulfill the promise made to Abraham that all families of earth would be blessed by his descendants. Every promise that our Lord ever made is true and will be fulfilled.
It was John Donne who wrote that “No man is an island, entire of itself, every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” As I read down this list of names, I am reminded that we are all one family. Someone once wrote that every war that has been fought is family strife. When will we learn that our battle is not with flesh and blood? According to the angels, Jesus was born unto all of us. We will live that way in Heaven; but God expects us to get started with it down here.
Some of the folks in the lineage of Jesus were, as the country song says, “On the wild side of life.” Who but God, could produce a perfect Christ out of such a pedigree? And just think what God can do with you and me.
Let this hymn be our prayer today: “How kind of you our Savior, for us to come to earth. O may we not by sinning, despise your lowly birth… We need you, O Lord Jesus to be our dearest friend. Your love will guard and guide us and keep us to life’s end.”
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
