Job 1:21

“Rejoicing in the Lord”

“Then Job arose…and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said… ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD.” Job 1:21

Today’s passage does not come easy for some who have suffered loss and who have prayed prayers that seemed to have failed. I find it interesting that Job had to get up to fall back down. He first fell because of the weight of sorrow; then he got up from his grief and fell back to the ground in worship. Even though he lost much, yet he could say, “Blessed be the name of the Lord.” No matter how we interpret our loss; what is important is that we can still say, “Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

Some of you who read this have experienced much grief and pain. Your greatest witness is that you still sing the Lord’s songs, and still say in your worship, “Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

Like the Lord’s family who were in exile, you may feel like asking, “How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land?” Somehow, we do; the saints always have.

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails, and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.” Habakkuk 3:17-18

This song says it well:

“When the morning falls
On the farthest hill
I will sing His name
I will praise Him still

When dark trials come
And my heart is filled
With the weight of doubt
I will praise Him still.”
