“Following Our Good Shepherd”
“All the paths of the lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and His testimonies.” Psalm 25:10
Among all the questions in the world, some of the most fascinating are the ones not asked. There have been questions that I have been afraid to ask, and some that I did not know how to ask. Most of us do not appreciate nosy questions, or questions that are designed to do harm. Some tried that on Jesus and discovered that they were out of their league; Matthew wrote, “From that day on no one dared to question Him any further.”
When Jesus called disciples to follow him it is interesting that no one asked, “Where are you going?” They just followed like sheep that do not try to second-guess the shepherd. The only time they ever brought up the question was before the cross when Jesus said, “Where I am going, you cannot come now.”
Did you think about asking the Lord where you were going when he called you to follow him?
I have enjoyed the pastures where the Good Shepherd has led me. The kind and smiling faces that have greeted me in this life have been joyful lights that have kept darkness at a distance. As it sometimes is in this world, there have been times when energy, hope and peace found a drain in my soul; yet there were springs of living water that flowed back in and renewed the heart.
There are places and circumstances so pleasant that we would say, “Lord, let’s go no further.” Yet, He keeps walking toward the forest of the unknown. “But, I have never been that way before Lord; I am sure to become lost.” “You will never be lost in my footprints, just follow me.”
Do you know the first question that God ever asked? It is “Where are you?” The answer is important to Him. It should be important to us. This old song asks a good question for any who will follow the Lord:
“What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
leaning on the everlasting arms?
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
leaning on the everlasting arms.”
