“For I Was Hungry”

“For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.” Matthew 25:35-36

“I haven’t done enough… Can you tell me what more I should do?” I don’t know how many times that we had that conversation. It was more than the dementia that was approaching like a creeping shadow. Neither was it someone who was bargaining eternity with God. She was one of the kindest, most generous, self-giving and faithful Christians that I have ever known. Only God can know the number of people who have received life changing blessings from her giving heart.

There is a kind of love that can never be satisfied in this life. There will always be something more it wants to do. It keeps no record, no list of what it cost; but just the opposite. Never does it say, “You owe me,” and neither does it say, “Look at me.” That kind of love can only be satisfied when it is crowned with the knowledge that it has done all that it could do. That is the kind of Love that sent Jesus to the cross.

People who love like that are the ones who arrive at Heaven by trusting in the saving grace of Christ, but still believing that they should have done more. They even question the Lord’s assessment of their life. “Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and help you?” His answer: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

The memories of Saints like these remain as an inspiration for us. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

Now, what about you and me; what in the name of Jesus are we doing?

A beloved hymn asks, “How many are the lost that I have lifted? How many are the chained I’ve helped to free? I wonder have I done my best for Jesus; when He has done so much for me.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
