Genesis 1:1

The Bible was not written to be a science book, but a book of faith. It did not tell us all the details about how creation happened, but who made it happen. Faith does not measure our knowledge, but our belief. Even science itself is a gift from God that should enable us to be better caretakers of the earth. It is for the good of humankind, but never is it a substitute for God.

When the people of God were leaving the temple to return home they would look out at the mountains and valleys that they had to cross and travel through. The way was long, difficult, and challenging, but they believed Genesis 1:1, and for that reason they could go on with their journey. In unison they could be heard to say: “I lift my eyes to the hills, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” –Psalm 121:1-2

Others looked at the vastness of the heavens and realized the greatness of God’s love. “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” Psalm 8:3-4

“By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command…” Hebrews 11:3. That’s good enough for me, I believe!

We too can continue the journey through trying times because we know the answer to life’s question: “Where does our help come from?” Let the people of God say, “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
