John 21:12

“Come to Breakfast”

Let’s be honest: Have you ever allowed your sulking to keep you from doing something you really enjoyed? Did it ever bother you because the people around you refused to join in your pouting drama? Someone has said, “Smile and the world smiles with you, cry and you cry alone.” That is not always true, but the point is well put. Smiles always have open arms, and pouters hug themselves. Sometimes we just need to get over it and get on with life. Peter discovered that you can.

“I am going fishing.” Where do you go when life unravels? Do you have a thinking place, or something to do that will get your mind off what is troubling you? Peter went fishing. If he thought that he was going to be alone he was wrong. Half of the disciples said, “We are going with you.” They bobbed up and down in an empty boat. Everything was empty: their nets, their hearts (the place where they had treasured all their hopes); it was all empty. Life without Jesus is always empty.

Someone said, “Remember how He came to us walking on the restless sea? I don’t guess we will ever see that again.” Peter just stared off. No one said anything to him because he had been known to let go with harsh words when he was hurting; and he was really hurting a lot.

A voice came from a silhouette on the shore, “Children, have you caught anything?” There is a Gospel song that says, “Standing somewhere in the shadows you will find Jesus, and you’ll know Him by the nail prints in his hand.”

At the end of every night (even those nights that last longer than many sunrises) there is a dawning of a new day. I can’t imagine the joy of that moment; a breakfast cooked by Jesus, the rising of the Bright and Morning Star; and the long darkness finally surrendering to the Light of Love.

Not once did he bring up yesterday’s pain that he suffered. Not once did he say a pouting word to friends who were not there when he was in his darkest hour. It was a new day and yesterday’s failures were all erased by a Savior with nail prints in his hands. “Don’t waste this beautiful day with guilt and sulking. It’s a wonderful life, now come and have some breakfast.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
