Matthew 14:30

But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!”

“Lord Save Me”

Notice Peter’s situation when Jesus saved him. He was neither on top of the water or sunk. He was beginning to sink. How many of us can identify with that? Christian friend, where are you on the sea of life today? Are we walking with Jesus, beginning to sink, or perhaps even sunk? Beginning to sink means we can still be saved from drowning and being sunk is certainly redeemable.

How did this happen to one who was doing so well with his/her walk of faith? It wasn’t that they did not want to walk with Jesus, or that it was impossible. I am afraid I understand all too well what happened to Peter. The scripture did not say that he took his eyes off Jesus, it only says, “seeing the wind he began to sink.”

We can walk with Jesus and at the same time pay too much attention to the wind (or the problem it represents). When we focus on the wind we begin to sink. We may have kept on walking through the storms and trials of life, desperately tried to keep believing, keep seeing by faith.

What happened to us that made us begin to sink? We saw the invisible wind and feared its power.

It was a short yet very effective prayer, “LORD SAVE ME!” Jesus was so close that He immediately reached out and took hold of him. How did they get back to the boat? I don’t think they swam back, but Peter walked hand in hand with Jesus, and so can we.

“In my night of dark despair
Jesus heard me and answered my prayer
Now I’m walking free as air
Hand in hand with Jesus

Hand in hand we walk each day
Hand in hand along the way
Walking thus I cannot stray
Hand in hand with Jesus.”
