“Ray Amos – Humility – Psalm 131:1-2”

Psalm 131:1-2

“Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. Surely, I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.”

Humility

With words like these the Psalmist will never sell self-help books on success. They are the opposite of what many believe to be the formula to achievement. The Kingdom of God is never going to travel the same direction as the kingdoms of this world. That leaves us with a very simple choice: Stop kicking our feet against the pricks, turn this train around and go with Jesus, or go the way of this world and succeed in things that end at the grave.

No one is ever too humble to serve the Lord, but we can surely be too important to serve Him. “Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord, and he will lift you up!” Teach our children that it is not the “Who’s Who” that inherits the earth, but the meek.

Humility does not have a proud heart. It never demands the attention of admiration when it walks in a room; and it never looks down on another person; “Nor are my eyes lofty.”

Humility doesn’t demand the high places, neither does it build its own towers of Babel, but waits on the Lord to lift him/her in His own way, and in His own time. The first can boast, “Look what I have done;” the second, “See what the Lord can do.”

Humility relates to a most valuable resource that is never found in the “Rat Race.” (It doesn’t matter if we are the king or queen of the “rat race,” we are still a rat.) That precious resource is contentment and rest. “I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother.”

“I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands;
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand

Than to be the king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin’s dread sway;
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
