Amos 8:1-2
“This is what the Lord GOD showed me: a basket of summer fruit. And he said, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the LORD said to me, “The end has come upon my people…””
“A Basket of Summer Fruit”
It is that time of the year already. School is back in session, Tennessee has won their first football game, the flowers have lost their luster, gardens are exhausted, the farmer’s market will soon have no more fresh vegetables to offer; and the mountains will be putting on their coats of many colors.
The prophet Amos was shown a basket of summer (ripe) fruit. Something had to be done quickly with it or it would spoil. It was a visual aid to say to God’s people that the moment of urgency had come.
Perhaps we have all done our share of putting off the things that are important for our faith. This time of the year reminds us of the urgency of our own relationship with God. Jeremiah wrote, “The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved.”
“WE ARE NOT SAVED.” The tragic events that are going on in the world cry out with urgency that we need ongoing salvation from many things. Summer fruit cannot preserve itself; but the Lord can make something beautiful and everlasting with it.
Our friends and families, our communities, and churches, even our own souls are in that basket. Do we realize the urgency of giving our very best to the work of the Gospel? Do not forget to nurture your Christian life. The fruit of our life is precious to God, we must not let it ruin.
“Waiting for the harvest, and the time of reaping, we shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves. Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves, we shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.”
