“RAY AMOS – The Saving Light – Micah 7:8”

Micah 7:8

“Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.”

“The Saving Light”

The old lighthouses have been a symbol of faith for many Christians. Pat and I have visited a few of them and it has always been enchanting. Only God knows how many sailors have been directed, saved, and comforted by the faithful towers shining their light during the darkness and raging storms.

Most lighthouses are now decommissioned. Their lifesaving work has been given to modern technology. I once read a newspaper article written by a towboat operator. He was pleading with local authorities to keep a lighthouse working. He said that even with modern navigation, his experience had been that in some situations the lighthouse was still a better guide when he was towing a disabled ship home.

Lighthouses served the travelers of the sea like an old lantern has served the people of these mountains. Wherever we are, we have always needed a light to chase the darkness away. Have you ever gotten out the old family lantern when the electricity failed? Have you sometimes wished to go back to that old country church that illuminated the way before all our technology changed the world? Sometimes we just need to blow the dust off the Bible, hold a hymnal, or kneel in prayer.

Today we ride by so many decommissioned churches that someone thought were out of place and time. A favorite gospel song speaks about these old lighthouses of our heritage. Some say tear it down because the big ships don’t pass that way anymore.

The lyrics continue: “Then my mind goes back to a stormy night when just in time I saw the light. Jesus is the lighthouse, and from the rocks of sin, He has shown His light around me, that I might clearly see. If it wasn’t for that old lighthouse, where would this ship be?”
