Colossians 3:2
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
“NOT OF THE WORLD”
One year during Annual Conference our family rented the downstairs apartment of a cottage at Lake Junaluska. The children were young, and the cottages usually worked well. That year we had no idea that the upstairs would be the home of a woman who must have lived in high heel shoes on a hardwood floor, and who was constantly doing voice exercises for the opera (And I don’t mean the Grand Ole Opry). That week we had no trouble setting our minds on things above us.
I don’t think that is what the Bible meant with this text. Jesus once prayed that our Father would keep us because even though we live in this world, we are not of it. We have no choice but to be busy with the things around us, but our affections are above all of this in a place we call our eternal home.
Once when Jacob was at one of his lowest moments, he dreamed a dream. There was a staircase to Heaven with God standing above him. It was a dark night for him. He had made his bed of stone and his misery consumed him. Suddenly there was ONE standing over him whose name was LOVE. God would have Jacob to look up and know that no matter how low, there is a way up and out. Set your mind, your dreams, your hope, your goal on things above.
God says to the child of God, “Keep seeking the things above.” It is possible that once a person receives salvation that he/she may say, “Well, that’s settled, now back to the rat race.” We are encouraged to keep on seeking and KEEP LOOKING UP, there is so much more up there than down here. God would not have us to hitch up to this earth. The old hymn says,
“More about Jesus would I know…
More about Jesus on His throne,
Riches in glory all His own.
More of His kingdom’s sure increase.
More of His coming, Prince of Peace.”
