Genesis 28:17
Jacob said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”
“HOLY GROUND”
We have a beautiful panoramic view of the hills and mountains around Kingsport from our house. One of the things I noticed right away is the number of church steeples we can see. When the leaves fall, I am certain that there will be even more.
Each one points upward reminding us that there is a heavenly city above. As I look at these, I try to figure out what church they rest on. Pat and I have taken a few rides in our car to find them. Each steeple, like Jacob’s Ladder, marks a special place where Heaven and earth have connected for some of God’s children.
Beneath these glimmering towers the saints have gathered, kneeled, and prayed; voices have joined in hymns and songs, and hands are lifted in grateful praise.
On this ground the children run and play, wear shepherds’ clothes that look a lot like dad’s bathrobe, and angel’s wings carefully glued and sewed. They sing “Jesus Loves Me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” I hope they never lose the song. And, if they do, the steeple marks the spot where it is always sung.
Only God can know the numbers of people who wrestled with life in this place. The tears that have soaked the altars, and souls that found the Lord. The walls are permeated with the aroma of worship from the past and present. Here two become one, children are presented to the Lord, and saints rest one final time as they step off the last round of Jacob’s ladder.
Truly, beneath each steeple it can be said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”

And I know that there are angels
All around
So let us praise Jesus now
For we are standing in His presence
On holy ground’
