Colossians 2:10

“…and God has made you complete in Christ.”

“What Makes You Complete?”

Since we moved I keep having to take boxes out of the storage building in our back yard to find something we need. The other day I had to almost completely empty it. It felt good to find what I was looking for; but then, everything had to be put back in the building (another miracle). I understand the woman in today’s lesson.

Luke wrote about a woman who had ten coins and lost one. That became a crisis for her, and she went into action to find it. What could have been so special about that coin that she would clean her house in the middle of the night to find it? And why would the neighborhood rejoice when she found it?

It is enough to say that what she was searching for was completeness. (Ten is the number that represents completeness.) What makes you complete? Of course, we expect the obvious answer to be Jesus; but what makes your relationship with Jesus complete?

One Sunday morning a husband and wife came to our church for the first time. They soon became an active part of the congregation; they brought so much joy and faithfulness with them. I visited them that first week and, in our conversation, asked what brought them to our church. “I don’t know,” he answered. “It was Sunday morning; I was on the deck drinking coffee and reading the paper. All was well but I had the feeling that something was missing. I went in the house and said, ‘Honey, get ready, we are going to church.”

How long has it been since you inventoried your faith? Nine coins were as no coins to the woman in the parable. Do we settle for less than a full relationship with Christ? Is it possible that some of us need to turn the light back on in our soul, and do some housecleaning until we find the missing piece of our happiness with God?

The Psalmist wrote, “He restores my soul.” That means that something valuable has been taken from my life, and the Lord is ready to help me find it and put it back. A hymn that I love says, “My soul is satisfied, my soul is satisfied; I am complete in Jesus’ love, and my soul is satisfied.”
