Luke 5:28
“And he left all, rose up, and followed him”
“FOLLOWING HIM”
Remember summer? Remember gloriously pleasant days for almost unlimited outside activities, and how good the a dip in the water, pool or ocean felt on a July afternoon?
During July, up north in the Pine Tree State of Maine, many of the ponds and lakes abounded with water lilies, really beautiful flowers with yellow centers, white pedals, and a super fragrance. From roots in a muddy and dark bottom they lift fragile stems up through the water until their blooms emerge in the air just above the waterline.
Now while these northwoods beauties were growing below the surface of the lake or pond, they still have all the properties of a beautiful flower, but it is not until they emerge into a new element, different from mud and murky water, do they display their beauty.
When Jesus Christ approached Levi, a crafty tax collector, he was in store for something truly different. In Jesus’ presence, Levi was in a new element, and the hidden greatness that was in Levi came to flower.
When Jesus summoned Levi, he didn’t hassle him about his previous shady dealings, nor did Christ give him a lecture on honesty or future conduct. He said two words: “Follow Me.” “That’s all, “…and he (Levi) left everything, and rose above his murky waters and followed Him. (Luke 5:28)
When the day seems to have hidden flowers and blessings . . . “Listen”, God might call your name . . . bidding you to “Follow Him” . . . To be a blessing to ourselves or someone else. God made the Levite and waterlily capable of rising above their murky waters to flower. This is His desire for all of us, as well.
