Isaiah 41:6
“Each one helps his neighbor And says to his brother, “Be strong!”
“HELPING HANDS”
Imagine what it would be like if there was a reunion in Heaven of all the characters in the nativity of Jesus. We know the guest list: Mary and Joseph, Zechariah and Elizabeth; and of course, John the Baptist, Simeon and Anna, shepherds and Magi. I’m sure that the farmer who owned the stable be present with his family. These would be gathered around the humblest King, the Lamb with scars, their Savior and Lord.
Perhaps there would be another table of invited guest: The unknown and the unnamed that did the little things for Mary and Joseph as they traveled the long hard miles. These were people who had no idea that they were entertaining the mother of their Messiah. They only saw wearied travelers who needed a helping hand and a lot of encouraging love.
There is no scripture that mentions them; yet I am sure that they were there in the story. They were the Jeanettes and Isabellas with their torch of light and Love, the neighbors and ordinary folks.
In every great story there are those who have a place in the lights on the stage; but there are many more who work behind the scenes without applause or recognition. I believe that there will always be people who are kind and good-hearted. Their names are not known to the multitudes; but each of us knows some of them because they were good to us. Whoever we are, and whatever we have accomplished; there are a million humble deeds of good down to earth people who have helped get us there.
Sometimes it is the angels who are bending near the earth who help those who are beneath life’s crushing load. Other times it is a neighbor, a friend, or a stranger. Then, there is family who sacrifice for each other because that is what you do. We do live by the Love of God and in the love of the common people.
“If I can help somebody, as I pass along
If I can cheer somebody, with a word or song
If I can show somebody, that he’s travelling wrong
Then my living shall not be in vain…
If I can bring back beauty, to a world up wrought
If I can spread love’s message, as the Master taught
then my living shall not be in vain”
