“The word of the LORD came to Elijah, saying, ‘Go away from here and turn eastward…”
“GOD GIVES CLEAR DIRECTION”
As I type this devotion the lights of Kingsport and the surrounding hills are like sparkling jewels. From here I enjoy watching the community awaken each day. It is dark, but soon the sun will faithfully rise in the east and paint the beginning of a new day.
It is very noticeable in the Bible that those who served the Lord did not serve Him blindly. The Lord gives clear direction about where to go and what to do. There is no such thing as blind faith when God is leading.
The Lord told Elijah to go east. What direction are we going today? What direction will we travel in our heart and soul?
West leads toward the setting sun. Its sky is beautiful and there are so many memories of the days we left behind; but I cannot dwell there if the Lord said go east. South may be more inviting, and north more exciting but the Lord said to turn eastward.
East is the direction of the rising sun. It is in that direction that God makes each day new. It brings hope as the Bright and Morning Star reappears to scatter our darkness. East is the spiritual direction we travel to meet the Lord.
We have come to the intersection of a New Year. If we want things to be better, then we must choose the path we will walk. “This is what the LORD says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls…” Jeremiah 6:16
The people told God that they would not go his way, and then they wondered why life went wrong. Now, the Lord is speaking to us. How will we answer him?
The prayer in the gospel song says, “Teach me Thy way, O Lord! Thy guiding grace afford. Teach me thy Way! Help me to walk aright, more by faith, less by sight; Lead me with heavenly light, teach me thy way!”
