BEING A PART OF GOD’S PEACE
“They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace.”
Jeremiah 6:14
“Ah! soul, are you here without comfort and rest, marching down the rough pathway of time? Make Jesus your friend ere the shadows grows dark; O accept this sweet peace so sublime!” How I love that old hymn.
Many of us grew up with those mountain parables, like, “Let well enough alone,’ ‘let sleeping dogs lie,’ or ‘Do not make a mountain out of a molehill.”
We come to realize that there are battles to fight and aggravations to ignore; May God give us the wisdom to know the difference. A person can sit beneath a tree that has a hornet’s nest in it and be in complete peace; at least until he decides to throw a rock in it. In many years of ministry, I have wondered at the mystery of why people speak peace when they really do not want it. We all know that a small fire and a lot of wind can burn down an entire community. The same is true with a few wrong words and a windy tongue.
Peace is a gift from the Lord who said, “My peace I give unto you.” It is also one of the fruits of the Christian life. It is our Christian witness in a world of conflict and divided opinions. We can conform to the world and fuss along with them, or we can be transformed by the renewing of our mind in Jesus Christ. The Bible instructs us with these words, “If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” (Romans 12:18) Let us finish singing the song:
“Peace, peace! wonderful peace,
Coming down from the Father above,
Sweep over my spirit forever, I pray,
In fathomless billows of love.”
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
